SVK’s achievements and strengths are:

Shramika Vikasa Kendram has been working for community development through collective action by the rural poor in Pedda Kothapally mandal. It visualises a society free of discrimination and inequalities and seeks to give its members equal opportunities for self-development.

The organisation took off by mobilising local resources to promote education among marginalised groups such as the dalits and tribals. A few years later, the UNDP recognised its commitment and its close rapport with community and invited it to implement its women’s programmes in Pedda Kothapally mandal of Mahabubnagar district. Shramika Vikasa Kendram was instrumental in forming 300 women’s self-help groups as part of the intervention. Thrift and credit activities were initiated with the objective of enhancing social capital. 31 village level networks of these groups and their federation at the mandal level under the style of the Mandala Mahila Samakhya are the other major achievements of the organisation in this context.

In 1997, CRY came forward to support the organisation’s efforts in the direction of elimination of child labour. More than 6000 child labourers from the mandal have been mainstreamed to school with CRY’s support so far and there have been vast improvements in access to health care and education for marginalised groups.

ILO also, joined hands with Shramika Vikasa Kendram in 2002 to work for the elimination of child labour in Thadoor mandal of the same district. 1657 child labourers of the 2000-odd child labourers in the mandal were mainstreamed to formal educational institutions during the lifetime of the project.

In addition, SVK has run schools for child labourers under the NCLP and has conducted bridge courses for more than 1500 girl child labourers under the DPEP.

Health programmes have also been initiated for adolescent girls, pregnant women, lactating mothers, and infants during the last 3 years under the RCH scheme.
